Friday Qur’an Reflections: What Better Time Than Now, To Read, Ponder, Reflect and Act?
It took me up until last year to read the Qur’an from cover to cover. To be quite honest, I am so ashamed that it took me until my adulthood to embark on that journey! Essentially, that is how I started these sometimes daily, weekly, or (unfortunately) monthly Qur’an reflections. On the days that I do truly reflect upon the words of Allah (swt), I notice my actions to be more sincere, faithful, and according to Allah (swt).
My quest was simple: to read and understand just the surface of the holy Qur’an. The mas’haf (book) I use has both Arabic and English text. The English translation is by Sheikh Muhammad Sarwar. (From the English translations I have come across, this is by far my favorite!)
Here’s a brief as to how I ‘reflect’ on my readings:
As I read, I highlight the verses that really move and inspire me, as well as the verses I want to refer back to that tell the stories of the Prophets (pbut). For the verses that I do not understand, I mark them so I can look up the tafsir (exegesis).
There are verses that refer to people of a specific time, and although these verses are speaking to them, there are still many lessons to be learned in our modern world today. For those verses (and any verse I feel I can relate to), I will write down a sentence or two about what this verse reminded me of or how I can improve my nafs (self).
